What they do
The Sikkim Development Foundation is a Gangtok based society founded in 1999 by a group of Sikkimese professionals concerned with unemployment and governance in the state. It describes itself as a non political, non sectarian organisation working on community led sustainable development, and its work covers needs assessments across sixteen sub divisions, livelihood projects, documentation of heritage and indigenous knowledge, and climate change and disaster risk reduction. Its best known project is the Borong-Polok handmade paper unit in south Sikkim, set up in 2003 as a village cooperative with equity capital and participation from local households. The unit makes paper by hand for monasteries writing sacred texts and exports to Singapore and Thailand. The foundation holds FCRA registration number 227430012.
