Sitapur Eye Hospital began in 1926 as a small eye dispensary at Khairabad near Sitapur, started by Dr Mahesh Prasad Mehray, and moved to its present Sitapur premises in 1945 after the foundation of the current building was laid in 1943. The hospital is run by The Sitapur Eye Hospital Trust, whose governing body the official management page describes as a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. It provides eye care including cataract surgery, corneal transplantation and glaucoma management, and runs outreach eye camps and optometry training across Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring Uttarakhand.
