Barefoot College, registered as the Social Work and Research Centre, is a grassroots organisation founded in Tilonia village, Ajmer district, in 1972 by Sanjit Bunker Roy. It trains rural and semi-literate women as solar engineers, teachers and health workers through a hands-on, oral curriculum rather than formal literacy requirements. The Tilonia campus also runs night schools for working children, rainwater harvesting and a rural handicrafts enterprise. This Tilonia-based organisation operates independently of, and states it has no association with, the separately registered US entity Barefoot College International.
