SEWA is a membership-based organisation of self-employed women workers founded by Ela Bhatt in Ahmedabad in 1972, growing out of the women's wing of the Textile Labour Association. It was registered as a trade union in 1972 and now has an associated federation of cooperatives and self-help groups. SEWA organises informal-sector women workers such as vendors, home-based workers and small farmers for better wages, financial access and social security, and has grown to several million members across multiple Indian states.
