What they do
The Society for Andaman and Nicobar Ecology is an environmental group based in Port Blair that works on conservation of the Andaman ecosystem. Its longtime secretary Samir Acharya led a public interest litigation, joined by two other conservation organisations, that produced a 2001 court order restricting encroachment onto Jarawa tribal land and further construction of the Andaman Trunk Road. Acharya died in October 2020, and an award for coastal and island conservation has been given in his name each year since 2021. The group remains active under secretary Samhita Veda Acharya, who organised a joint World Turtle Day event with two other island conservation bodies in 2025.
