What they do
Chingari Trust runs the Chingari Rehabilitation Centre in Bhopal, which provides free physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and special education to children born with congenital disabilities in families affected by the 1984 Union Carbide gas disaster and subsequent groundwater contamination. It was founded by gas-tragedy survivors and activists Rashida Bee and Champa Devi Shukla, who used their 2004 Goldman Environmental Prize award money to start the centre in 2006 with 15 children. The centre now supports over 200 children daily with therapy, lunch and transport.
