What they do
The Nagaland Gandhi Ashram is a rural development institution established in 1955 at Chuchuyimlang village in Mokokchung district by Gandhian social worker Natwar Thakkar, working under the auspices of the Bharatiya Adimjati Sevak Sangh. It has run a school, a medical clinic, a vocational training centre for school dropouts and persons with disabilities, and village industries such as oil mills, jaggery production, carpentry and khadi weaving. Villagers donated 232 acres of land on which the Mahatma Gandhi Centre of Social Work was later built, and a National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology extension centre was added on the campus. Thakkar led the institution until his death in October 2018, and the Chuchuyimlang site has continued to host annual 'Noble Deeds Day' commemorations and NIELIT activities through at least 2025, though no current head of the ashram itself could be identified.
