What they do
SWaCH is a wholly worker-owned cooperative of self-employed waste pickers that runs door-to-door waste collection in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad in partnership with the municipal corporations. It grew out of Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat (KKPKP), a waste-pickers' trade union formed in 1993, and was formally institutionalised as a cooperative society in 2008. Its roughly 3,800 member waste pickers collect from several hundred thousand properties, integrating an informal workforce into the city's formal solid-waste-management system.
