What they do
Aravind Eye Care System is a not-for-profit eye-care network founded in Madurai in 1976 by Dr Govindappa Venkataswamy (Dr V) under the Govel Trust, starting as an 11-bed hospital. It has grown into one of the world's largest eye-care providers, delivering high-volume, low-cost cataract surgery and general ophthalmic care, much of it free or subsidised for poor patients. Its associated Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology trains eye-care personnel and advises health systems internationally. It runs hospitals across several Tamil Nadu cities and in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
